the start of something new... About the Audition
Audition appointments are strongly recommended. Please e-mail us to make an appointment. Please prepare one complete song (contemporary popular music or musical theatre preferred), and bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. The preliminary audition will include dance; please dress accordingly.

All roles are open. A breakdown of the specific roles may be found immediately below. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to write!

About the Cast
We are seeking 25-35 actors, with an approximately even ratio of males to females. The vast majority of characters below are played at very roughly 16 years of age, but auditioners may be any age above 12 years. All actors should be extremely energetic and move enthusiastically - remember, this is a Disney musical. The roles are:

Troy Bolton: male, star point guard for the Wildcats basketball team. Athletic, cheerful, open, and energetic, Troy is a natural leader and everybody’s friend. Must sing very well and look comfortable with a basketball.

Gabriella Montez: His opposite number, she is shy, a bit nervous and awkward in public, but gains confidence when in her own element. She’s usually the smartest one in any room, but does not think of herself that way. Must be an exceptional singer with a strong medium belt.

Sharpay Evans: Rich, beautiful, and shrewd, Sharpay might seem mean, but that’s just because she’s never quite figured out that there’s anyone else in the world. She’s the star of the high school drama club, and not by accident: she’s a polished singer and dancer, with genuine star power.

Ryan Evans: Her brother, and her male equivalent, albeit with a more developed conscience and somewhat better social skills. An outstanding dancer with a good, light tenor.

Chad Danforth: Troy’s best friend, he’s a good best friend: loyal, funny, supportive, and the tiniest bit cocky. Lives and dies for basketball. Chad sings a bit in the stage production.

Taylor McKessie: Chad’s counterpart in the nerd herd, she’s just as competitive academically as he is athletically. She’s as arrogant as he is cocky, but like Chad, she’s basically a good friend. Sings a little.

Kelsi Nielsen: Somehow, at 15, she’s written the music, lyrics, and orchestrations to an entire show. So she’s obviously brilliant, but also introverted, easily cowed, and a little too intense.

Zeke: Another basketball player, very earnest; loves to cook. Some solo singing.

Martha: Another academic, very excitable; loves to dance. Some solo singing.

Coach Bolton: Troy’s father, a former basketball player himself; plays about 38-45. Macho, good-natured, and a bit slow on the uptake.

Ms. Darbus: The school’s (adult) drama teacher, who is totally, completely, and in all other ways insane. A large role with minimal singing; requires excellent comic timing and energy.

The Chorus: Including basketball players, cheerleaders, nerds, members of the band, members of the drama club, and other assorted and sundry students. Some solo opportunities for both singers and dancers.
